Rally Sunday

Rally Sunday for the 1st day of Sunday School is the 12th. Youth will gather in the sanctuary as usual at 9:15 for the opening followed by workshops 9:30-10:15. Parents gather in the fellowship hall at 9:15 for registration paperwork. We are jumping right in to lessons this year! I look forward to seeing you all there...

Rally Sunday

Anyone who could come to the church on Saturday Sept 11 at 9:00 to help with decorating the church for Rally Sunday would be much appreciated!

I am working on making large posters from a page of the coloring pages from each session on different colors of butcher paper. I am halfway done with tracing them onto the butcher paper and would like to make the titles and maybe parts of the picture glittery. They could be used all year for decoration in the Sunday school wing but place in the narthex and glass hallway on rally Sunday. We also need to finish the trim in Karla's room (if it hasn't been done yet-I haven't checked in the last couple of days) cut out leafs and sprinkle them with glitter as well for extra color and place them around the building.

Pastor had a great idea of placing balloons in the sanctuary in the shape of a rainbow so we would need people to tackle that as well.

Let me know if you can help so I can plan how much to do for sure, it is too much for me by myself with my arm still healing.

Sound Operators

We are in need of sound equipment operators. If you have had any inclination in the past regarding this ministry, it is a great time to learn! Really, the summer time services are a little simpler, and without Sunday School there is a shorter time between services and it is easier for me to hold over for a training session. Contact me through the church office or the church webpage.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School will be July 19-23 at Lord of Life. There will be a morning session for preschoolers. Children entering grades 1-6 have day camp from 9-3 with Lutherhaven staff in charge. The theme is Imagine.
Snack makers are needed as we will be in charge of snacks this year. Watch for a list of needed items. We are in need of imaginative snack ideas so pass your ideas along. If you want to help in any way contact Alice Allison through the church office.

We really need committee members to take a look at the site and see if the information on the site is a)accurate and relevant, and b) even there. I see a great write up in the Messenger each month about what is going on in the library, but we don't have a library page for instance. So send me your info and we'll get cracking on making our website a tool you want to use.

Women's Retreat

Kennewick First Lutheran Church the ladies are back from the Women's Retreat! What a fabulous weekend! Naps, massages, mani-pedis, sleeping in, fabulous food, prayer, tons of free crafts, worship...oh, and we did a 20-WOman canoe trip. Our true viking heritage came through!

The Lutheran Course

Plan on joining an adult education opportunity beginning Wednesday, September 12. For 6 consecutive Wednesdays and ending on Tuesday October 30, we will be offering the Lutheran Course. Based on The Lutheran Handbook, The Lutheran Course takes you through the fundamentals of Lutheranism in 7 sessions. Each session features a large-group DVD presentation with top-notch theologians, followed by a small-group time that works through the ideas with depth and humor. Great for new Lutherans, old Lutherans, and anyone in between. Saints and Sinners welcome. As you sign up in the Narthex or contact Greg McMurphy through the church office please indicate your preference for starting time. Each session will last approximately 2 hours and will begin with a light picnic style potluck.

The trip has been a blessing to us, and a real help to the homeowner. We had the chance on Sunday afternoon to drive to Slidell, and also spend a little time in the French Quarter. There isn't a lot of damage evident in the French Quarter, music was playing and tourists were in evidence. We all split up that afternoon and found something to eat and alot of interesting sights to see. When you travel just a little ways out from there, the devastation becomes evident. I am only talking a matter of blocks to the east before you see many vacant homes and evidence of the National Guard's home searches. There are bright spots, we found a little deli that is open around the corner from our worksite called Poppa's that serves Po-Boy sandwiches, which is where most of us are getting lunch.

Life in the camp is pleasant but rustic. Joyce has the theme from M*A*S*H running through her mind all the time, but I just remind her they didn't have Muffaletto sandwiches in Korea. Our cook is a former French Quarter chef who is working part time for LDR, and it is much appreciated as the rooms and showers aren't exactly Motel 6. She did such a good job on the chicken breast and scalloped potatoes that the group is having a hard time deciding whether to take the homeowner up on the offer of a seafood restaurant meal on Thursday because we might miss out on some gumbo.

Katrina Trip

Our group of 12 is ready to go do the Lord's work in Lousiana next week. Please pray for us in our travels and know that you will be in ours. We will be staying at Atonement Lutheran in Metairie, LA. We will try to post some pictures here while there, and will certainly have some pictures and stories to share on our return.

Pancake Breakfast

March 18 between services there will be a pancake breakfast in the
fellowship hall between services, so bring your appetites. Thanks to
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans your free will offerings will be
matched, up to $500. Proceeds will go towards defraying transportation
costs on the New Orleans hurricane relief trip in April.

Katrina Informal Meeting

Captive Free to perform

Friday February 9 at 7 pm the christian contemporary group "Captive Free" will make a one time special appearance at Kennewick First Lutheran. This is a wonderful opportunity for youth and the young at heart to catch an energizing group. No cover, freewill offering encouraged.

OSHA Orientation

Travel dates are set, you may go Saturday 21APR through Saturday 28 APR
as I have chosen to do or you may travel in Sunday 22 APR as originally
proposed. Either will work. I have emailed flight numbers out, if
you want those details and have not been contacted, drop me a line at Greg McMurphy
We will be doing a brief construction safety orientation over three
nights. We start tomorrow, Thursday January 11 and have planned on
finishing over the next two Thursdays. Unfortunately there is a
conflict with next Thursday because of the Living Liturgy event. We
will decide tomorrow how to re-schedule.

A very interesting place - everyone has a story.
I found the Mississippi River Bridge. From the top, you are above the trees - It's absolutely flat as far as you can see!!

8 months after the hurricane; some people are still living in tents. Plenty of jobs available - no place for people to live.

Kennewick First Lutheran trip to Slidell

Karen, Joyce, and Martin will be leaving on May 11 to work in Slidell and surrounding area on hurricane reconstruction. Our prayers are with them as they do the Lord's work in Louisianna.
